“…Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

“And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians.  And Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the one and fortieth year of his reign.” (II Chronicles 16: 12, 12).

“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; (Psalm 103: 2-4).

“And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.” (Matthew 23:9).

“Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.” (Matthew 12: 47-50).

“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32).

The truth that we must “know” to free ourselves from any and all negative, destructive, and diseased physical and mental conditions, is the truth that our being is spiritual in body, soul and mind, as opposed to the seeming reality of physical being. It is the truth which Christ Jesus came to deliver to humanity—the truth that God, Spirit, is our Source and only Parent. It is the truth that we are Spirit’s children, not the seeming children of the flesh. Once we actually know this truth of spiritual being, we are able to heal with it.

Now, before I go any further, I must elaborate a very important point: To know something is to realize the complete truth of it. To know something is to have no doubts about it. To know something is not characterized by the state of mind that wishes something to be true, or hopes it is true, or tries to will it to be true, or tries to force one’s self to believe it is true. None of these states of mind will spiritually heal anything. When doubt and fear are clearly present in consciousness, there is no knowing going on. When we are not ‘knowing’ the truth (of eternal life and health in God, Spirit) we won’t be ‘set free’ from any material condition.

This human experience is a mentally-based phenomenon, where we’ve forgotten our spiritual identity and, temporarily, seem to have our being in a material form. Furthermore, we seem to actually feel and perceive this fleshly body and environment through five, physical senses of touch, hearing, sight, taste, and smell. Yet, both physical pleasure and pain are felt by consciousness—not by a massaged or wounded part of the flesh, but by a construct that seems to report these sensations to a misguided consciousness, which believes itself to be a material creature.

Matter feels nothing. It merely reports some type of contact, unobtrusive or obtrusive, to consciousness. It is a state of mind which feels the flesh, both in pleasure and even in extreme pain. Then, when our hand encounters scalding hot water, we say, “I am burnt,” when, in fact, our spiritual substance has never been touched by anything in the material dimension to affect our being at all. This falsity of injury, however, can be overcome by all kinds of occurrences.

For example, when an individual yields his or her consciousness to a hypnotist, and the hypnotist says that that individual is eating an apple instead of an onion, the onion actually tastes like an apple to the one whose conscious belief has been changed. (Having given up his or her own belief in favor of what another has told them.) Upon awakening out of this delusion of eating an apple, the subject then reverts back to his or her own beliefs about onions. Thus, the taste of an apple was the result of the belief in consciousness—not the object being eaten, nor the flesh digesting it. This incident proves that whatever things we hold to be true in the deepest regions of our own consciousness (at any instance in time) has everything to do with feeling the fleshly body and healing the outer world of form.

To know a truth is the state of mind that accepts its validity, and realizes why it is true. I keep beating this drum because this is where so many individuals on the spiritual healing path fail to bring about the healing results they desire. They are still waiting to get beyond the mental struggle against the truth of being. They have still not come to the knowing-the-truth state of mind which Christ Jesus was advocating. They are still arguing, within their own consciousness, against the eternal facts of wholeness, health, ever-present supply, and harmony under the divine Authority of Spirit. This knowing state of mind does not recognize matter as needing any attention at all, in order to be healed.

Here’s an illustration of the kind of knowing that has the key elements one needs to heal—knowledge of invisible laws, and trust in them: If you have brown eyes, you know it. There is no doubt, and you don’t have to look into a mirror to convince yourself of it. Nor do you expect the eyes to change color when you’re not looking. You expect it to be an ever-present part of you. You trust whatever material laws you believe to be in operation to preserve your eye color indefinitely.

Just so, when one realizes and knows that the ever-present spiritual selfhood is always present and true, right where a flawed, fleshly self seems to exist, but does not, this one trusts the invisible laws of Spirit to be in operation, despite all temporary, material appearances to the contrary. Casting out diseased beliefs, and replacing them with truth of spiritual (rather than material) existence takes control of the physical appearances. Material change follows any and all change in thought.

Trust in one’s ever-present spiritual health begins to vanquish the belief in any illness, despite what is being manifested in or on the material body form at any moment in time. The illusions of the flesh no longer dominate the emotions producing fear—specifically, fear of loss of our God-created and God-preserved laws over health and well-being.

When truth conquers all fear, the body transforms back to wholeness and normalcy. Why? Because truth has the power to change matter back to health, just as easily as false universal beliefs of diseased conditions produce the material manifestations of such conditions. We manifest disease because we believe in a material power opposed to God. We unwittingly take these material beliefs of un-health and material law into consciousness and allow them to make a home there.

Yet, the good news is that we are always FREE to know the truth of spiritual existence, and our forever place in the invisible Kingdom of God. We are always free to “take off” the material illusion of disease, injury, poverty, domination, and all other ills of the flesh, the way a child takes off a Halloween costume of a witch, to reveal the angel beneath.

So, in one sense, spiritual healing is so natural and simple that children are doing it, just by believing in God’s power to keep them well. In another way, it’s not so easy when one is still struggling to believe in it.

When I was in the public practice of spiritual healing, many of the people who called me were still struggling to believe in the truth of their Christ Selfhood—their true identity. They were struggling to know, rather than knowing or realizing it. A few wanted me to convince them of spiritual truth. Sometimes, someone would argue, ‘But if it’s true, why am I not well?’ That ‘if’ said it all. Despite all human appearances, they were well; but they still didn’t know it. They were well spiritually, and that’s all we can ever actually be. When we know this, the flesh must follow. Jesus said, “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” (John 6: 63).

On one occasion, someone said to me, “Well, I know this whole physical appearance of disease isn’t true, because nothing like this can really attach to my spiritual self. But I still feel some fear that the physical won’t change back to health.” I remember telling her to realize that her Christ Consciousness has no fear of material conditions; it already knows all spiritual truth. Her only condition was spiritual. She wasn’t a mortal, material person, with a material mind and body, sick or well; she was a spiritual individual, always whole and well, despite all physical appearances and feelings—and her real, Christ mind knew this! To be eternal is to be without beginning or end. To be eternal, we are eternal now. Every instance of our true, eternal life is now, along with our eternal health.

I then remember realizing, and telling her, that she’d see the physical illness changing back to wellness soon, because her thoughts were already half-way there. She was already realizing the falsity of her appearance of disease. Spiritual truth was starting to take over in her own consciousness, even before she called me. She wasn’t really struggling to know anymore. She knew. And in a couple of hours she was back to normal, all fears aside.

Once thought begins to build on spiritual truth, each truth denies the specific physical lie that seems to be true. Why do I call physical beliefs, lies? Because Christ Jesus, the Master Healer, called a woman who’d had a disease for eighteen years, a Daughter of Abraham “whom satan hath bound” (Luke 13: 16). Another time, Jesus called the devil “a liar, and the father of it.” (John 8:44 last line).

The devil, or satan (the false material sense of creation which we entertain in consciousness) binds us to disease, poverty, and all un-well being with lies of an existence apart from God. The Adam and Eve allegory in the Bible is meant to depict such a kingdom, away from God. Adam’s dream-state reality isn’t God’s spiritual creation; but the myth of a material creation in competition to the Kingdom of God, is the shared human condition. Adam was asleep, and the dream of material existence is still going on. That’s what we’re to awaken, spiritually, from.

The material lies tell us of a physical creation, where we live and move and have our being, apart from the spiritual creation of God with its eternal harmony. Addressing this very issue, the scriptures say of God, “For in him we live and move and have our being.” (Acts 17: 28 to;). Thus, an existence separated from our spiritual Source and Creator is, and always has been, impossible. It is the lie to end all lies. It is at the basis of all that we suffer in this human experience.

So, once thought turns to the truth of our oneness with God, some change has to occur in the fleshly manifestation of body because thought controls the expression of the form. Thought is at the basis of all we experience in this human theater. We manifest what we believe or accept as truth. Change this, and all things change. As spiritual truth takes over consciousness, material things change in accordance.

When my two children were little, I explained to them how this worked. Once they stopped believing they were sick or injured, the healing started right away. They were shown that they were not physical to begin with, so they couldn’t really be physically sick. They were always at one with their Source. They really lived right in the loving arms of divine Spirit. God was always stronger than the disease or hurt. They were always safe in God’s love.

It sometimes took minutes or hours to finish, but once the fear and belief of physical being went away, (even if a little bit) and the truth of God’s loving arms keeping us safe and whole took over their thinking, the healing started. But we had to stay with KNOWING the spiritual truth of things for it to finish.

Now, lest the reader thinks I’m suggesting that I’m not afflicted by the things of this world, nothing can be further from the truth. Each day we spend in this human experience brings challenges to overcome in consciousness. It’s not easy to stay above material thinking. When things are going smoothly, we take from the human condition what we can. But even those of us on the spiritual healing path must remember to keep the truth of spiritual being in the forefront of thought. When we just ‘go with the flow’ of the thinking around us, we suffer the same results.

A week ago, on a Friday morning, I went to a swimming class and spent an hour in an 84 degree pool. That’s a good temperature, as long as the air around the indoor pool is warm and comfortable. This wasn’t. There was no heat in the building, and the temperature outside was in the 20s.

I noticed a chill during the entire hour, but since I’m not too sensitive to cold, I ignored it. I didn’t even think about it. After the class, I spent a lot of time in the warm shower, trying to stop the chill. It finally left, and I went home. In the middle of the night, I awoke with a sore throat and congested head. I had to sit up just to breathe comfortably. I went through half a box of Kleenex before dawn.

Still, not once did I connect it to the pool incident. And since I was busy, I just worked around the symptoms, ignoring them, assuming they’d go away. Four days and two boxes of tissues later, I realized I’d been ignoring this cold too long. So, I sat down to know the spiritual truth of it. As soon as I did, the memory of the pool and the chill that took so long to leave came back to me. So, realizing that I was Spirit’s Daughter, I asked the Christ Consciousness within to bring forth the specific spiritual truth I needed to dispel this manifestation of disease in the head.

Immediately, several random thoughts came: just recall the basics…realize that your kingdom is not of this world, you live in the kingdom of God…as God’s spiritual off-spring, your very essence is Spirit, not matter…Spirit isn’t affected by heat or cold…you exist apart from all material form…Spirit has never taken a chill.

It was that last thought that hit the nail on the head for me. My real self had never been chilled, so no trauma needed to be acted out by the flesh. After several days of unnecessarily suffering the ills of the flesh, I finally remembered to take control of my thinking and stop this train from continuing down the disease track. The sneezing stopped right away. Within the next two days, all the other symptoms left.

This illustrates what I’ve found to be true about making that realization or knowing in consciousness. The healing usually doesn’t happen in the flesh instantly (although sometimes it does, if you’re really being spiritually strong) but the healing of the flesh begins once the truth of spiritual being comes forward in thought. The healing transformation then continues, as one holds the truth in consciousness, for as long as seems necessary.

I’ve made a promise to myself not to ignore things so long. But as everyone reading this knows, some days there are so many things coming at us, we get distracted by all that’s going on in daily life. We come under the spell of materiality, again.

The spell of materiality is always with us, until we leave this human experience. Even Jesus and his disciples, ate, drank, slept and did normal human activities, while at the same time healing so many afflicted people who followed them. For, when it came to the evils of the flesh that afflict and twist peoples’ lives out of daily harmony, these ancient healers actively took the mental control needed to deliver the afflicted from the destructive, material beliefs claiming power over God’s children.

Everything we’re taught about the reign of materiality and its bogus laws denies the reign of Spirit and Its everlasting laws. Yet, until we KNOW that immortal, spiritual being is the truth of our very existence, we won’t be able to transform our human bodies or situations with the spiritual truth which releases us from fleshly ills and unhappy situations.

For this reason, I never advise anyone who is not on the spiritual healing path to ignore symptoms of disease or other destructive scenarios. Use the human method of things (medical or holistic) until you feel strong and safer with spiritually mental methods, such as I’ve described here. Stay with the methods you trust until the knowing of spirituality prompts you to make a change in your methods of handling disease and other discords.

Knowledge of God’s control over all of us, throughout eternity, is capable of healing all discords in this human experience; but, first, you have to KNOW this.
